Building Financial Health for a Brighter Tomorrow

On Thursday, October 21, 2021, Peoples Federal Credit Union will join over 56,000 credit unions around the world to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day. The theme of ICU Day 2021 is “Building financial health for a brighter tomorrow.”

ICU Day highlights the many ways that credit unions across the world help members improve their financial health and well-being.

Credit unions were built on the principle of “people helping people.” We’ve seen that philosophy in action for more than 100 years, with credit unions providing access to affordable financial products and striving to meet the needs of underserved communities. Peoples Federal Credit Union is honored to be a part of this proud tradition.

Peoples FCU invites both members and nonmembers to visit the Nitro branch at 419 1st Ave South, Nitro, WV 25143 and celebrate this day. We will have a variety of vendors from arts and crafts, woodwork, to delicious food. The vendors will donate 10% of their profit for the days event to the Nitro Food Pantry and Christmas Baskets Program in Nitro. Peoples FCU will share member stories and event highlights on social media using #ICUDay.

A credit union is not like any other financial institution. It is a cooperative, not-for-profit organization, owned by its members, with a mission to provide personalized financial services tailored to the total needs of the members. With competitive savings and loan rates, few or no fees, and member ownership, credit unions are truly a unique financial institution.

The first branch of Peoples FCU opened in 1965 as the Union Carbide Institute Employees Federal Credit Union. The credit union was chartered to serve the employees of Union Carbide at Institute, West Virginia. The facility, at the time of the charter, employed more than 2,500 individuals. The credit union operated on site and served the employee members and their families.

In February 2001, Peoples FCU converted its charter from Select Employee Group (SEG) credit union to a Community Charter credit union, allowing anyone who lives, attends school, works, volunteers, or worships in Kanawha, Putnam, and Mason counties to be eligible for membership.

Peoples Federal Credit Union is a full-service financial institution serving over 10,000 members. The credit union’s goal is to continue providing the best service and products to its members.
